Tegoroczna, już 19. edycja Festiwalu Reggae na Piaskach, stała pod znakiem zjawiskowego koncertu reaktywowanych, jamajskich gwiazd Rootz Underground. Ponadwugodzinny koncert składał się nie tylko z przekrojowego materiału z niemal 20-letniego dorobku zespołu, ale też z kilku zaskakujących coverów. Wcześniej w 13. Konkursie Młodych Talentów imienia Ryszarda Sarbaka zaprezentowały się młode nadzieje polskiego reggae. Między koncertami można było napić się oryginalnej, jamajskiej kawy, pojeździć na symulatorach, kupić płyty, poczuć głęboki bas sound – systemów, czy po prostu skorzystać z atrakcji na plaży.
W tym roku po raz pierwszy zdecydowaliśmy się na umieszczenie w line-upie głównej gwiazdy festiwalu nie w sobotę – jak to było dotąd – ale w piątek, po przesłuchaniach konkursowych młodych polskich kapel reggae. Pomysł się sprawdził pod wieloma względami i wszystko wskazuje, że będzie to dla nas ważny sygnał do ustalania programu na przyszły rok.
ROOTS REGGAE PROSTO Z JAMAJKI
Bezsprzecznie, największą gwiazdą festiwalu był jamajski zespół ROOTZ UNDERGROUND z charyzmatycznym liderem Stephenem Newlandem na czele. Gdy dwa lata temu po raz pierwszy gościliśmy Stephena na Piaskach na koncercie z Jafią nawet nie marzyliśmy, że tak szybko uda się nam sprowadzić cały zespół. Po znaczących zmianach w składzie, lider wrócił do nas z trzema nowymi, bardzo młodymi jamajskimi muzykami, których w Ostrowie wsparła równie młoda, ale już doświadczona w graniu z Jamajczykami, sekcja instrumentów dętych złożona z absolwentów Akademii Muzycznej w Katowicach.
Ta mieszanka doświadczenia i młodości dała w Ostrowie piorunujący efekt. Podczas porywającego, ponaddwugodzinnego (!) koncertu usłyszeliśmy nie tylko przekrojowy materiał z niemal 20-letniego dorobku zespołu, ale też kilka zaskakujących coverów. O ile zagranie utworu Boba Marley’a nikogo nie powinno zdziwić, to „Paint It Black” Rolling Stonesów – nie mówiąc już o utworze z repertuaru grupy The Cure, mogło zaskoczyć. A wersji „Jah No Dead” nie powstydziłby się sam Burning Spear.

FESTIWALOWA SELEKCJA
Sobotnie koncerty otworzył chyba pierwszy zespół reggae z Ukrainy – VYO. Co ciekawe, nasi goście zza wschodniej granicy przyjechali specjalnym… autobusem pełnym swoich fanów, którzy pokonali naprawdę długą drogę z Kijowa. I tak oto czarnoskóry wokalista z Ukrainy, o nigeryjskich korzeniach, śpiewał muzykę z Jamajki na festiwalu w Polsce. Eksperyment cokolwiek egzotyczny, ale udany.

Po gościach z Ukrainy na scenie zameldowali się dobrzy Piaskowi znajomi. JOHNY ROCKERS, to jeden z najciekawszych młodych polskich zespołów, który nie stanął w miejscu i konsekwentnie rozwija się. W Ostrowie udowodnili, że stać ich już na dobre występy na festiwalowych scenach.

Po nich estradę opanowały doświadczone polskie kapele. Publiczność na długo zapamięta jubileuszowy koncert z okazji 20-lecia zespołu DUBSKA, z którymi z tej okazji zaśpiewali specjalnie zaproszeni goście: Dawid Portasz, Jarek Kowalczyk i Johny Halicki. Jak na dobre urodziny przystało, nie zabrakło wielkiego tortu urodzinowego, którym częstowaliśmy pod sceną festiwalową publiczność na Piaskach.

Po kilku latach przerwy, do Ostrowa wróciła też JAFIA, tym razem w nowej odsłonie. Polska publiczność po raz pierwszy mogła usłyszeć premierowe fragmenty nowego albumu, zrealizowanego w najlepszych studiach na Jamajce. I choć momentami stylistycznie Jafia zaprezentowała zupełnie nowe, muzyczne oblicze, to nie zabrakło też utworów za które kocha najbardziej ich polska publiczność.

Na finał zagrał BAKSHISH: w nowym składzie, również z nowymi piosenkami, ale wciąż z tym swoim pięknym feelingiem. To chyba najstarszy, wciąż działający zespół reggae w Polsce i nie ma rodzimego fana tej muzyki, który nie przynajmniej kilku ich utworów. Wszystkie zabrzmiały na Piaskach pięknie, bo Jarex udowodnił, że jest w doskonałej formie wokalnej.
KONKURS NA MIARĘ OCZEKIWAŃ
Poziom odbywającego się w przeddzień festiwalu 13. Konkursu Młodych Talentów im. Ryszarda Sarbaka był bardzo wyrównany i satysfakcjonujący. Konsekwentnie stawiamy na promowanie nowych, polskich kapel i z przyjemnością stwierdzamy, że nie było zespołu, który odstawałby od pozostałych. Koncerty Green Roots i Pulse Genarations z pewnością mogły się podobać. Zeszłoroczny laureat Konkursu powrócił na Piaski w mocno zmienionym składzie i pod inną nazwą: jako Seeyuh.
Nagrodę od zespołu Rootz Underground otrzymał jednak zespół Big Up, który będzie mógł otworzyć koncert Jamajczyków podczas ich następnej wizyty w Polsce. Laureatem publiczności, która – jak to zwykle na Piaskach – wybierała „swój” zespół, zostali Roots Soldiers. Młodzi muzycy na długo zapamiętają, jak nagrody wręczał im na scenie sam Stephen Newland.

DODATKOWE ATRAKCJE
Kolejną nowością było wprowadzenie w obydwu dniach Nocy Sound Systemów. W tym roku masowali Was basem 9MILEsOUNd i Dub Station. Pozytywne reakcje skłaniają nas do kontynuowania tego pomysłu również w przyszłym roku.
W tym roku sporo działo się również poza sceną koncertową. Zaprzyjaźniony z festiwalem „polski Jamajczyk” – czyli Tomek Łada z najamajke.pl, przyjechał do Ostrowa promować atrakcje Treasure Beach. Częstował przy tym oryginalną, jamajską kawą z Gór Błękitnych i opowieściami o tym, jak najlepiej zorganizować wyprawę na wyspę muzyki reggae.
Kolejny raz, dzięki współpracy z Mahle Behr Ostrów Wielkopolski, promowaliśmy bezpieczną jazdę samochodami. Na specjalnym stoisku każdy mógł do woli korzystać z symulatorów jazdy, sprawdzić swoje reakcje w ekstremalnych sytuacjach i otrzymać fachowe porady od profesjonalnego instruktora, Daniela Filipiaka.
Nie mogło też oczywiście zabraknąć stoiska Zima Records z płytami, czy rastafariańską biżuterią od Oligatora. Można też było na miejscu zapleść sobie dready, a szczególnie liczną w tym roku „dzieciarnią” opiekowała się nasza niestrudzona animatorka, Daria Jankowska.
Sprawdziła się też nasza fotograficzna ścianka, przy której chętnie robiliście sobie zdjęcia, a my przeprowadzaliśmy przy niej wywiady z zespołami i krótkie sesje zdjęciowe po koncertach.

ENGLISH VERSION
Since the end of the 19th Reggae Festival in Piaski and the 13th Young Talent Competition named after Ryszard Sarbak, a week has passed, emotions and tiredness have subsided, so it’s time for our summary.
This year, for the first time, we decided to place the main star of the festival in the line-up not on Saturday – as it was before – but on Friday, after the auditions of the young Polish reggae bands. The idea has proved itself in many respects and everything indicates that it will be an important signal for us to set a program for next year.
Undoubtedly, the biggest star of the festival was the Jamaican band ROOTZ UNDERGROUND with the charismatic leader Stephen Newland at the helm. When we visited Stephen in Piaski for the first time two years ago at a concert with Jaffia, we did not even dream that we would be able to bring the whole band so soon. After significant changes in the composition, the leader returned to us with three new, very young Jamaican musicians, who in Ostrów supported a young but already experienced in playing with the Jamaican, a section of wind instruments composed of graduates of the Academy of Music in Katowice.
This mixture of experience and youth gave the fulminating effect in Ostrów. During the thrilling, over-2 hours (!) concert, we heard not only cross-section material from the band’s nearly 20-year-old output, but also several surprising covers. Unless one should be surprised by Bob Marley’s song, “Paint It Black” Rolling Stones – not to mention the song from The Cure’s repertoire – might have surprised. And the version of “Jah No Dead” would not be ashamed by Burning Spear himself.
After the concert, from our festival-goers, we heard several times that who knows if it was not the best concert in the history of Reggae in Piaski so far. And you know what? We will not denny.
The level of the 13th edition of the Young Talents Competition was very even and satisfying. We consistently focus on promoting new Polish bands and we are happy to say that there was no band that would stand out from the others. Green Roots and Pulse Genarations concerts could certainly be liked. Last year’s winner of the Competition returned to Piaski in a strongly changed line-up and under a different name: as Seeyuh.
However, the Big Up team received the award from the Rootz Underground team, which will be able to open a concert of the Jamaicans during their next visit to Poland. The winner of the audience, who – as is usually the case in Piaski – chose “their” band, were Roots Soldiers. Young musicians will remember for a long time how Stephen Newland handed them awards on the stage.
Another novelty was the introduction of the Night of Sound Systems on both days. This year, you were massaged with 9MILEsOUNd and Dub Station bass. Positive reactions encourage us to continue this idea also next year.
Saturday’s concerts were opened by the first reggae band from Ukraine – VYO. Interestingly, our guests from across the eastern border came with a special … bus full of their fans who have traveled a really long way from Kiev. And so a black singer from Ukraine, about Nigerian roots, sang music from Jamaica at a festival in Poland. An experiment that is exotic but successful.
After the guests from Ukraine on the scene, good Sand friends checked in. JOHNY ROCKERS is one of the most interesting young Polish bands who has not stood still and is steadily growing. In Ostrowo they proved that they can afford good performances on festival stages.
After them, the band was mastered by experienced Polish bands. The audience will long remember the jubilee concert on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the DUBSKA band, with whom specially invited guests sang on this occasion: Dawid Portasz, Jarek Kowalczyk and Johny Halicki. As befits a good birthday, there was a huge birthday cake, which we served under the stage of the festival audience in Piaski.
After a few years break, JAFIA also returned to Ostrów, this time in a new installment. For the first time Polish audience could hear the premiere fragments of the new album, made in the best studios in Jamaica. And although at times Jafia stylistically presented a completely new musical face, there were also songs for which Polish audience loves them.
The final was played by BAKSHISH: in the new line-up, also with new songs, but still with this beautiful feeling. This is probably the oldest, still working reggae band in Poland and there is no native fan of this music, which does not have at least some of their songs. All of them sounded beautiful on Piaski, because Jarex proved that he is in excellent vocal form.
This year, a lot has also happened outside the concert stage. Our friend from the festival “Polish Jamaican” – or Tomek Łada from najamajke.pl, came to Ostrów to promote the attractions of Treasure Beach. He also served the original Jamaican coffee from the Blue Mountains and stories about how to best organize an expedition to the island of reggae music.
Once again, thanks to cooperation with Mahle Behr Ostrów Wielkopolski, we promoted safe driving. At a special stand everyone could use the driving simulators, test their reactions in extreme situations and receive professional advice from a professional instructor, Daniel Filipiak. Of course, the Winter Records stand with plates or Rastafarian jewelry from Oligator could not be missing. It was also possible to have dreadlocks on the spot, and our tireless animator, Daria Jankowska, was looking after the “children” this year. Our photographic wall also worked well, where you were willing to take pictures of yourself, and we carried out interviews with her teams and short photo sessions after the concerts.
We have carefully read all your comments, posted in social media under the first photo relations and films from Reggae on Piaski – also the critical ones. Although we do not agree with all of them, we will try to draw the appropriate conclusions from them for the future. For example, we will certainly solve the theme of gastronomy and the availability of sound systems after concerts in a different way.
This year, we noticed an exceptionally much older audience. You came to Ostrów from many cities in Poland, which was easy to see in the campsite. Many of you return to Piaski every year, but there were also festival debutants. Ba, we “discovered” a few people who have been on Piaski since the very beginning, that is from 2001!
Thank you very much, because this Festival is for you, that we can meet each other, listen to good, “spicy” reggae and stay together. We immediately start working to make the next year’s 20th Reggae edition in Piaski meet our common expectations. We already have some ideas on which we will work.
